Cherry Dollface comes to the UK!!

 Waaah!!! Okay so this got announced a few days ago but I haven't been on the blog until today... So excited about the announcement that the wonderful Cherry Dollface is FINALLY coming to the UK! Haven't been able to snap my tickets up yet so don't buy them all up before I do but you can either join in one of her popular group classes showing you vintage hair and make up tricks or pay for her one on one!! In this hour of personal time, you can ask her anything you like, a particular hair style you've been dying to try or a make-up idea you just can't get right. 

The beautiful Cherry is an absolute inspiration to every girl with her contagious confidence and celebration of women! Her Youtube page www.youtube.com/thecherrydollface has everything you could ever want to see as a girl and as an aspiring pin up! 

So hoping I can get tickets and I can't wait to meet the beauty!

Beautiful Brighton.

I went for a wonderful walk on Brighton Pier yesterday and saw it with new eyes so I took a few pics... The weather wasn't great but I love the look of the wet wooden slats on the ground! My particular favourite is the gorgeous carousel but what started my snapping was this retro waffle stand sign...

Random Acts of Kindness

This morning, I was on my way to a meeting (about my upcoming TV show - stay tuned!!) and popped into Starbucks for a wintery and warming caffeine boost. As I stood second in queue I noticed a young girl say something to the couple in front of me, which he declined as they had already paid, but I didn't hear what was offered.

Next, she moved on to me.

"Hi, can I pay from for your drink please, I'm doing random acts of kindess today', she said to me in a shy, American accent.

Well, my reaction was, I think, (or at least hope) similar to most people's, which I think could be a somewhat sad reflection on the human race. I took her up on the offer, since she handed a five pound note to the cashier before I'd stopped stuttering anyway, but I was quite reserved about it. I felt bad accepting her gesture but I also felt like it would be rude to decline. Instead, I asked her why she was doing it. 

"It's a school project, we want to see what happens when we do random acts of kindness."

As I left the store I promised the girl that I would do the same for someone else as I wanted to do something good back. 

At first I was incredibly awkward, which I think is sad. The fact that we find it so difficult to accept compliments, kindness and gifts just goes to show how little we actually do these things... We aren't used to it. After I'd got over the initial shyness though, her act made me really happy. It made me happy to think that things like this DO happen. So I have decided that I want to do this sort of thing more often. 

And, I didn't get to do anything quite this unexpected, but despite being offered my coffee in my meeting, I did the treating instead. Then, at lunch with a friend, we got talking to the very lovely waitress, so gave her a large tip, which she was incredibly happy with, and called us the best customers ever. Smiles all round - I thoroughly reccommend it.

Flowers

           

I mentioned my dear Granny's funeral the other week and here are some of the images of the funeral bouquet my Mum, Sister and I put together. My Granny was a horse rider and a lover of birds and nature, including wild flowers, so we felt it more appropriate and thoughtful of us to put together out own bouquets from scratch for the funeral, instead of simply ordering a standard arrangement.

We were able to find a lot of flowers in supermarkets, including stocks and sweetpeas, and we found a lovely Lewes local who sells bunches of wild flowers at a Lewes market. She put together a freshly picked bunch for us which we split among our three bouquets. 

Though not necessarily wild, we also decided to put our own flower in each bouquet. Though we weren't being over mournful about it, my sister just likes black so she had a stunning bloom spray painted black for her bunch. My Granny's favourite colour was blue (could you guess) so my Mum found some fantastic dyed blue roses and I have a fond memory of winning a nursery school competition with the tallest sunflower whilst I lived with her so I popped some stunning bright sunflowers in mine.

We found some plain blue crepe paper and some blue gingham tissue paper in a local stationery shop and some blue, white and natural raffia at the Garden Centre at Brighton Racecourse (where we also got more of the flowers including the sunflowers, roses and black blooms) in there fantastic flower department.

We bunched the plants up the night before the funeral and were able to keep them alive by wrapping them in cellophane (as you can still see from the image) and standing them in a bucket with water collected in the bottom of the cellophane. The morning of the funeral, we travelled them up to Surrey in this way too. Once we arrived in Surrey, we emptied the water out and wrapped them in the crepe and tissue paper, wrapping them in raffia to keep them together. As they were wild flowers, we decided that we wanted a more rough look, which was also slightly easier. At this stage, they only needed to survive a few more hours so we didn't put any more water in them so they travelled easily lying down. 

I was really please with the final arrangements and I think it was a lovely idea that my Granny would have adored. I don't necessarily believe in all that funny stuff once someone has parted but a couple of days after the funeral a nice lilac wild flower ended up stuck in the wind screen wiper of my car. I like to think she was saying thanks. 

Pop Up Vintage Fair

This Saturday sees the return of Katie and Annabelle's Pop-Up Vintage fair to Brighton. 

From 10am until 4pm, the fair will be taking over Brighton racecourse to showcase a selection of vintage delights! Multiple sellers will be there with furniture, fashion and homeware; with live music, food and even afternoon tea!

This will be the event's second time at the Racecourse due to a successful debut and entry is a bargain price of just £2 for adults and free for children so, with free parking to boot, there's really no excuse! 

If the British Summer is not quite up to scratch, the majority of the fair, including the music, is indoor, and there's face painting to occupy the kids.

Sorry about the recent break, it's been a bit manic at home since my Granny's death.. Things are starting to get back to normal now though so there should be more coming. Including something about funeral flowers which I'll get to this afternoon. 

Absolute Magazine - June Issue!

The June issue of Brighton's Absolute Magazine is now available. This is the issue debuting my brand new retro column! 

This month is just a little introductory column. I discuss what I think 'retro' and 'vintage' are (please feel free to challenge me with your ideas below!) and give a mini review of this year's and the first ever Atomic Festival which took place a couple of weeks ago. 

The cover article is mine too - an interview with the beautiful Crystal King, Proud Cabaret's Miss Proud 2014. A stunning redhead, Crystal is down to Earth and full of ideas, read about my meeting with her on page 36. 

Also in this issue is an interview with new fitness writer Sarah Hitchman, a beautiful fashion shoot in association with Barbour, and we meet Frank Skinner before his 'Man in a Suit' Tour to the Brighton Centre on June 1st.

Love and Death

My Granny passed away this bank holiday weekend. Bereavement is a strange thing. My Grandad died when I was 17, I was heartbroken. But I think age changes a lot.

That's not to say I'm not heartbroken by the death of my Granny though... I'm just not showing it in the same way as I did 8 years ago. We didn't see her as much as I used to, at the moment it almost feels like she could just be sitting in her hospital bed like every other day for the last few months. When I sit alone and really think about it, I know that I'll never speak to her again, see her, hold her hand or kiss her head. I never got to tell her about my new job; though I found out 4 days before the end I never told her, I just wanted to hear about her day the last time we spoke. I never showed her my Pin Up shots and she never got to see me Jive. I know she'd be proud of me though. I present two shows on local radio and she used to listen pretty much every week, unless she fell asleep on the sofa.

Anyway, this is just a bit of a stream of consiousness really, getting things off my chest. I will have things to remember her by, a teddy that I've been inseperable from since I took it from her flat, a beautiful pastel tea setand, mostimportantly, 25 years of memories.

Mermaids

Off home tonight to watch the classic movie Mermaids I think. 

I was really saddened today by the news of the passing of the legendary Bob Hoskins. I love everything to do with Peter Pan and Hook is an absolutely great film with a hilarious portrayal of Hook's right hand man, Smee, by Hoskins. 

I have decided, however, that Mermaids has to be my favourite movie starring the man himself. A funny, feel-good movie, Mermaids is packed with stars and singing and I'm definitely up for snuggling up on the sofa with the mother tonight to watch it. 

Not until I've finished in the Studio though, loads of brand new music to be played on Seahaven FM tonight including this week's number one single 'Waves' by Mr. Probz. Then, from 9pm, it'll be an evening of sing-alongs and cherry Fro-Yo.

Absolute Magazine's new resident Columnist!!

The column will be based around the Rockabilly and Rockabetty lifestyle in and around Brighton, with hair and make-up tutorials, night life reviews, fashion statements etc etc!!

Wheels Day 2014

Last Friday saw the Surrey Street Rodder's Event 'Wheels Day' back for it's 40th Anniversary. Moved from it's usual location at Rushmoor Arena, the event was held this time at the famous Dunsfold Airfield, or the Top Gear Test Track to many. 

The event was blessed with a dry and sunny day; though the wind was speedy and bitterly cold it could have been worse. Thousands of stunning vehicles turned up (with their owners) to enjoy the day. 

I went along in my mum's stunning lilac Plymouth Barracuda and we took our friend in this showstopping red Ford '32 Roadster. The fields were packed with beautiful vehicles and there was a lot to get around, some great stalls, including Hot Rod Tiki and Brilliant; Coffee and Food vendors a plenty, and some standard market-type stalls thrown in for extra cash. 

Sadly, due to the okay weather and great reputation of Wheels Day, more than 18,000 vehicles turned up to enjoy the show. This is more than 4 times the record amount at past shows. This unprecedented amount of people meant that some entered without paying the charitable entry fee and some didn't get in at all. Tailbacks into Guildford were all over the radio traffic updates and complaints were made. This has led to an official announcement from the Rodders' that there will be no more Wheels Day...

I'll confess the show wasn't quite what I wanted it to be either. I last went to Rushmoor in 2012 and it was a fantastic day but I understand the need to upsize. After 40 years of successful events, this was, effectively, a first attempt for the Rodders' and complaints shouldn't have been quite so unforgiving as we all need some trial and error in these things. Judging by the mistakes of this year, you would hope that the kinks would be ironed out by next time if they had just been given the benefit of the doubt. Instead, the first Car Show of the UK Summer is no more.

Changes

There have been some changes to the Sublow site. Now renamed Misty Monroe, this is my new site for all things pop culture. Music, Cars, Films, Fashion and Lifestyle; you name it, it's here.

If you have visited the site previously, you may know that it is quite a drastic change. Well, it is, but we all change and grow as time goes by and the old website had not had an update since 2011. This is my change. This is my growth. Let's see if I stick to it this time.

I'll try and update as often as possible, including items related to both my work at Seahaven FM and Absolute Magazine.

Cringe. I don't mind the new, UK recording of Will.I.Am's smashing track 'Check It Out', and I suppose it's remotely understandable, given Cole's association with Will but the video, really? As it originally stood, the video was a quirky homage to Japanese TV and 'pop' artistry associated with the country and, of course, the singers looks fitted in perfectly, the beautiful Nicki Minaj in particular. To aid the new recording, however, someone thought it would be a good idea to film some add-on footage of Cheryl Cole as a rather forced wide-eyed bimbo. As much as, I'll confess, I love Cheryl Cole as herself, the awful attempt to 'quirk' her up with dodgy face-pulling and abrupt dancing makes for, quite frankly, some stomach turning TV. Cheryl is no Nicki. Deal with it and move on.

Nicki Minaj's debut album is out now.
